I always wish I could have the listener in the room with me when they’re listening to my mixes so I can talk about each track. So the next best thing is to write about it. Here’s my first shot at trying to talk a bit about why I’ve picked each track this month and why you should even care.
st track - Yes, the album art is horrible. It looks like a picture from Conan’s “if they mated”. But the music can stand on it’s own to such an extent that I’ve decided to include two tracks off this album. The Worry just builds and builds till you have the amazing “I gonna set you on fire” line repeated.
- ODESZA has a great album here with lots of collaborating vocalists. “It’s Only” has such a devastating yet calmly delivered line “I heard the news today that you’re not mine to keep. Don’t struggle too much now while I kill you in your sleep”. Uh, wow. More themes of blood, fire and love.
- The Juan Maclean have their best album ever here. Funky, melodic and housy with great the best vocal performances yet. From front to back it’s a great listen. It was hard to just pick one track but this one seemed to fit with the rest of the mix.
- Aphex Twin surprisingly at his most accessible. His first album in over 10 years and I love it. Complex rhythms and mutating melody that’s just off a bit but still catches your attention.
- I’ve been a fan of Gui Boratto for a long time now. Apparently he used to work with Garth Brooks hence some of the twang on the album. I’ve included this track on my latest DJ mix Pleasure Machine from last month but it’s worth listening to as a stand alone here.
- Ital’s music is great melodic techno with great arrangements and just oozing atmosphere.
- Simian Mobile disco is still trying to live down their early mashup days in my mind. But here they’ve created a great techno journey of an album. Probably cause it’s all made with analog gear and done in live takes. This track is a slow burner than just gets better over it’s 7+ minute length.
- Seekae is back with another track here. This one a bit darker and moodier that I thought fit nicely after the previous piece of music. I swear that guitar lick is from a Radiohead track.
- I liked this Mono/Poly track for it’s mood and ethereal indecipherable vocals.
- I’m expecting big things from Flight Facilities when they finally come out with a proper album. If this is a taste of things to come it should be great. The sample in the beginning really caught my ear as a possible manifesto and then the whole thing evolves into a slice of late 90’s deep house. Great vocals and tons of restraint, standing in stark contrast to a lot of EDM out there today. Check out the video on youtube if you have a chance but be warned that while elegant, it’s a bit NSFW.
